HOL is committed to making education accessible to anyone, anytime, anywhere. HOLcloud, HOL’s newest cloud-based platform, now offers compliance with Section 508 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.

What is ADA Compliance?

In September of 2010 the Department of Justice published the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards for Accessible Design. These standards require all information and electronic technology to be accessible for those with disabilities. The requirements are an interpretation of Section 508 from the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has created the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), setting the international standards for Internet accessibility and ADA compliance.

Why is this Important?

As distance learning becomes more prevalent, the need to accommodate students with a wide variety of backgrounds is essential. 11% of students in higher education have a disability. HOL is committed to creating an equivalent student experience by providing content that is accessible to any student anytime, anywhere, and on any device.

How we Comply:

The WCAG outline modifying content for accessibility compliance in four sections- Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust.

  • Perceivable

To make content more perceivable we have added text alternatives for all figures, and descriptive transcripts and captions for our videos. These modifications make our content accessible using assistive technologies such as screen readers.

  • Operable

We have made our platform more operable to students with disabilities by enabling keyboard access across our entire platform. We have also put extra effort into deciding the colors and contrasts used on our platform, ensuring usability for those who may have visual impairments.

  • Understandable

HOLcloud has been intuitively designed and coding has been modified to decrease redundancy and correctly convey organization when using assistive technologies.

  • Robust

HOLcloud is sufficiently robust to allow for reliable interpretation using a variety of assistive technologies.
